The Resort

Sauze d'Oulx is a genuine mountain village that developed into a ski resort in the early 20th century. Unlike some purpose-built ski destinations, the resort retains a real village character, with an Italian population and a way of life that exists independently of the ski season.

The village sits in a south-facing hollow in the mountains, sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds. The combination of its position within the Via Lattea ski area, easy road access from Turin, and a lively social scene has made it particularly popular with both Italian weekenders and British ski holiday visitors.

In recent decades the British market has become significant enough that several businesses operate with English-speaking staff, and the resort's après-ski scene has taken on a character that blends Italian mountain culture with the British ski holiday tradition.

Location & Access

Sauze d'Oulx sits in the Val di Susa, one of the main Alpine valleys connecting Turin to France via the Fréjus tunnel. The A32 motorway runs through the valley, making the resort approximately 76km from Turin city centre — about 1 hour 15 minutes in normal conditions.

Turin Caselle Airport (TRN) is approximately 80km away and is the main gateway for international visitors. The Oulx train station — approximately 10km from resort — sits on the Turin–Lyon TGV line.

The proximity to Turin is a key part of Sauze d'Oulx's character: it makes the resort ideal as a day trip or weekend destination for Italian city-dwellers, while also being accessible enough from a major international airport for week-long visits.

The Via Lattea (Milky Way)

Sauze d'Oulx is part of the Via Lattea — Italian for "Milky Way" — one of Europe's largest interconnected ski areas. The Via Lattea connects five resorts: Sauze d'Oulx, Sestriere, Sansicario, Cesana Torinese and Clavière in Italy, with a link to Montgenèvre in France.

The combined area offers around 400km of marked pistes accessible on a single ski pass — making it genuinely exceptional value compared to many smaller resorts.

Sauze d'Oulx itself was an official host venue for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, staging the Freestyle Skiing events — Moguls and Aerials — on the Jouvenceaux slope above the village. The historic Olympic rings and a commemorative sculpture remain in the village as a lasting reminder. Sestriere, connected by the Via Lattea, hosted the alpine ski events.

☀️ Sauze d'Oulx in Summer

The resort doesn't close when the snow melts. Summer brings hiking in the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Natural Park, mountain biking on the ski runs, paragliding from Sportinia, and a lively events calendar including the Ferragosto celebrations in August. The domestic Italian market in particular generates strong summer visitor numbers.
