Summer Events & What's On

Summer in the Val di Susa and the wider Piedmont region brings a calendar of local festivals, outdoor events and traditional celebrations. Here's what to look out for during a summer visit.

Key dates & seasonal highlights

Ferragosto — 15 August

Peak summer

Italy's main summer national holiday. Ferragosto (15 August) is the peak of the domestic tourism season in the Italian Alps — the entire country seems to be on holiday simultaneously. The Val di Susa and surrounding mountains are at their busiest during the week around 15 August.

If visiting around Ferragosto, book accommodation several months in advance. If you prefer quieter conditions, avoid this week and visit in June or early September instead.

Sagre & Local Food Festivals

Throughout summer, the towns and villages of Piedmont host sagre — local food and wine festivals celebrating regional specialities. Polenta, truffles, local wines and cured meats feature heavily.

These events are typically free entry or very low cost and offer an authentic taste of local culture. Check with the tourist office or look for posters around the village when you arrive — they're rarely advertised online in advance.

Mountain Trail Running Events

The Val di Susa hosts various trail running events through the summer, including races using the mountain trails above Sauze d'Oulx. These can affect trail access on race days — check local announcements if you're planning a specific hiking or biking day.

Trail runners will find the area well-suited for training runs at altitude with excellent mountain scenery.

Summer Concerts & Open-Air Events

Sauze d'Oulx and nearby Sestriere occasionally host open-air concerts and entertainment events during the peak summer season. These are typically organised by local authorities and vary from year to year.

For the most current events programme, check with the Sauze d'Oulx tourist office or the Via Lattea website closer to your travel date.

Finding out what's on during your visit

Summer events in Alpine resorts are often confirmed only a few weeks before they happen. The most reliable sources for current event listings are:

  • comune.sauzedoulx.to.it — the official municipality website
  • vialattea.it/en/summer — Via Lattea summer events
  • • Local tourist offices and noticeboards on arrival
  • • Ask at your accommodation — local hosts always know what's happening

Events further afield

Turin — only ~80km from Sauze d'Oulx — has a full summer cultural calendar including cinema festivals, open-air concerts and events. The city is very much alive in summer (unlike some Italian cities that empty in August) and is an excellent full-day excursion from the resort.
