Mountain Biking near Sauze d'Oulx
The Via Lattea ski area and the surrounding Val di Susa offer genuine mountain biking terrain in summer — from accessible flow trails to more technical descents, with lift access to the higher areas.
The terrain
The Via Lattea area has a growing summer mountain biking offer, with trails accessible from the resort and via the summer lifts. The terrain ranges from alpine cross-country routes between 1,500–2,800m to purpose-built descents.
The Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Natural Park — a significant natural area within the Val di Susa — offers forest trails and cross-country routes suitable for all levels.
Check vialattea.it/en/summer for the current season's MTB trail maps, lift access times and any guided ride options.
🚡 Summer lift access
Some of the Via Lattea gondolas and chairlifts operate in summer, allowing bikes to be transported to higher elevations. This opens up descents that would otherwise require long climbs.
Lift schedules and bike carriage rules vary by season — check vialattea.it/en/summer for current summer operating dates and any bike-specific lift passes required.
Trail difficulty
Green / Easy
Gravel paths and forest tracks with minimal technical challenge. Suitable for families and beginners on hardtail bikes.
Blue / Intermediate
More varied terrain with some climbs and descents. Requires basic bike handling skills and a suitable mountain or gravel bike.
Red & Black / Advanced
Technical singletrack, exposed sections and steep descents. Full-suspension bike and protective gear strongly recommended.
Bike hire
Mountain bike hire is available in resort during the summer season — hardtails, full-suspension trail bikes, and e-MTBs. Hire includes basic helmet and protective equipment in most cases.
Approximate hire rates: hardtail from €25–€40/day; full-suspension from €40–€70/day; e-MTB from €50–€80/day (all prices approximate, in €). Pre-booking is recommended in peak summer weeks (July–August).
Ask your accommodation or check with the tourist office (comune.sauzedoulx.to.it) for current hire shop details in resort.
Practical tips
Wear a full-face helmet for descents
Open-face helmets are adequate for cross-country trails but a full-face helmet is strongly advisable for technical downhill routes. Hire one with your bike if needed.
Check trail conditions after rain
Alpine trails can become very slippery after rainfall. Wet roots and rocks are a significant hazard. Check conditions locally before heading out on technical trails.
Bring sun cream and water
Altitude amplifies UV exposure significantly. Even on overcast days, apply SPF 50+. Carry at least 1.5–2 litres of water for a full day ride.
Download offline trail maps
Mobile signal can be patchy in the mountains. Use Outdooractive Pro, Trailforks or the Via Lattea app with offline maps downloaded before you set out.
